Quilts

Quilting has been an obsession of mine for years. I find the construction fascinating, and it has such a rich matrilineal tradition.

The connection to the maternal tradition allows gives me as the maker a place to express my vision of femininity and lets me re-imagine what a woman can be, rather than what’s she should be. I am interested in using familiar functional objects to communicate these ideas of changing the expectations placed on me.

What happens to the should that surround us when we decide not to give them power to dictate our lives? Can we make quilts for children we will never have?

This quilt features topographical lines from map of my childhood home, and attempt to question what happens when the body is seen as topography.

The second quilt holds a less imposing message, but instead focuses on the deconstruction of pattern, both visually and literally changing the patterns of generational expectations.
